A Massachusetts woman is dead after the car she was driving collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 90 in Charlton, according to authorities.State police said the crash happened at about 5 p.m. Wednesday on I-90 west near Mile Marker 85.6, which is near the Hammond Hill Overpass.According to investigators, a 2022 Freightliner truck temporarily stopped in the breakdown lane and shortly afterward, was struck in the rear by a 2010 Honda Civic sedan that — for reasons still under investigation — was driving in the breakdown lane.The driver of the Honda, a 27-year-old West Springfield woman, was trapped in her vehicle and suffering from serious injuries. Sturbridge firefighters and emergency medical services personnel removed the woman from the vehicle and provided medical aid, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.The driver of the Freightliner, a 38-year-old man from Pompano Beach, Florida, was not injured in the crash.The speed of the Honda is also believed to have been a factor in the crash, which state police said remains under investigation.Shortly after 7:25 p.m., the Massachusetts Department of Transportation was reporting the crash scene had still not been cleared and that drivers on the westbound side of I-90 were experiencing traffic slowdowns for 4.5 miles.State police said the right travel lane and breakdown lane on I-90 west were closed enear the scene of the crash for approximately three hours.
